Exploring the Suwannee River by Kayak: A Multi-Night Adventure from Fargo, GA to White Springs, FL

For outdoor enthusiasts looking to disconnect from the chaos of modern life and reconnect with nature, few experiences compare to kayaking the Suwannee River. Stretching over 246 miles from the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico, the Suwannee offers some of the most serene and untouched waterways in the Southeast. One of the most rewarding stretches is the multi-night journey from Fargo, Georgia to White Springs, Florida—a trip that immerses you in rich history, abundant wildlife, and the peaceful rhythm of the river.
Upper Suwannee River Trip Overview: A Wild Journey Through Natural Florida
Launching from the Stephen C. Foster State Park in Fargo, Georgia, this section of the Suwannee River winds through towering cypress trees, remote swamplands, and scenic bluffs before reaching the charming town of White Springs, Florida. Depending on your pace and experience, the trip can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days, covering roughly 60 miles of water.
This section of the river is part of the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, which is well-marked and dotted with designated river camps, primitive sites, and state park facilities that make planning overnight stays easier for paddlers.
Day 1: Launching from Fargo and Entering the Okefenokee's Edge
Your journey begins in Fargo, GA, just downstream from the Okefenokee Swamp—one of the largest blackwater swamps in North America. The river here is narrow, mysterious, and deeply shaded by Spanish moss-covered trees. Wildlife sightings begin almost immediately. Expect to spot egrets, ibis, turtles, and even the occasional alligator basking on a log.
As the river widens, you’ll begin to feel the solitude and vastness of the region. The first day usually includes paddling into Florida, and spending the night river side. Dinner will be cooked over an open fire. (Practice Leave No Trace Principles during the duration of your trip)
Day 2: Into the Heart of the Suwannee
Day two is where the magic of the Suwannee truly comes alive. You’ll find yourself gliding past limestone banks, sandbars perfect for resting, and dense forests alive with birdcalls. This stretch of the river is remote—cell signal fades and the sound of paddle strokes and nature take over.
Primitive camping for night 2 will be above Big Shoals State Park, home to Florida’s only class III whitewater rapids (portaging is required for all paddlers).

Day 3: Arriving in White Springs
The final stretch toward White Springs, FL introduces more dramatic scenery. Limestone outcroppings become more pronounced, and you may notice the riverbanks growing steeper as you approach this historic town. Paddling along Little Shoals you will have time to reflect on the wonders of nature you have just spent the last 2 days enjoying.
White Springs itself is a gateway to Florida’s cultural past. Once famous for its healing mineral springs and Victorian resorts, it now stands as a quiet town with friendly locals, cozy lodgings, and a deep appreciation for the Suwannee River. After you paddle take a moment and explore The Spring House a short walk from our outfitters location
Wrap up your trip with a visit to Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, where you can stretch your legs on walking trails and learn about the composer who immortalized the river in song.
